Reading drop-off between permission prompts

How to tell whether users leave because of a permission dialog or because the step before it already lost them.

Permission prompts for notifications, location, or camera often sit near the end of onboarding. When completion falls, teams blame the prompt. Sometimes that is fair. Often the damage happened one screen earlier.

Instrument the screen before the dialog

Measure dwell time and back-navigation on the explanation screen that precedes the system dialog. If users already leave there, fixing the OS prompt wording will not recover them. Your completion audit should treat the explanation and the system dialog as two checkpoints, not one.

Compare grant rates by entry path

Users who arrive from a deep link or a campaign may hit permissions with different expectations than organic installs. Split completion and grant rates by entry path before rewriting copy for everyone.

Delay is a measurement decision

Moving a permission later in the path changes both completion and grant rates. Record the decision and the date in your measurement notes so later comparisons stay fair.
